Airport expansion at Austin adding three hangars, 12 acres of aircraft parking, and relocated regional detention — navigating heritage trees and wetlands
The Challenge
The project faced several major constraints that complicated the design and expansion process: protected heritage trees near aircraft areas, wetlands requiring environmental protection, and an existing aircraft taxi path cutting through the site. In addition, the team had to navigate conflicts between older airport development ordinances and newer city code requirements, especially regarding creek buffer regulations.

What We Did

Solved a major drainage challenge by relocating an existing regional detention pond, which helped recover valuable aircraft-use space and significantly increased the developable area.

Coordinated with city officials and environmental/drainage stakeholders to gain approvals and maximize developable space.

Relocated and consolidated an existing regional detention pond closer to the creek to improve land efficiency.

Optimized the site layout to maximize usable aircraft parking and operational flexibility.

Outcome

Added approximately 12 acres of new aircraft parking pavement for private aviation operations.

Constructed three 40,000 SF hangars, two departure lounges, and office space.

Recovered valuable aircraft-use space by relocating an existing regional detention pond.

Reduced detention requirements by redesigning stormwater infrastructure more efficient

Navigated complex environmental constraints including heritage trees, wetlands, and aircraft circulation areas.
